Are you a postgraduate student joining the University of Birmingham? Welcome! We’re your Guild of Students, the Students’ Union at UoB, and we’re here to help you make the most of your time here. It’s a common misconception that postgraduate uni life is all about your degree, we have lots for you to get involved in from attending events, to joining a student group or supporting you with any challenges you come across.
The fun all starts with Welcome 2026! Welcome starts on 21 September 2026 and you’ll have the chance to attend our popular events and meet new people.
Events for Postgraduate Students
From networking opportunities where you can socialise with other postgrads to relaxed activities and club nights, there’s a Welcome event for everyone. On 2 October, we’re hosting a Cheese and Wine social for postgraduate students to unwind and network in a relaxed setting. You can help yourself to free cheese and wine and use this as an opportunity to make some new friends!
If you’re living in student accommodation, we recommend heading to one of our Welcome To Halls: Pizza Parties as this is the perfect way to meet your neighbours while enjoying a slice of pizza! Our Welcome Fair is one of our most popular events, giving you the chance to meet popular brands and bag some awesome freebies.
Commuting or attending an online course? We have a Commuter Students’ Social and an Answer From Anywhere Quiz and Social so you don’t have to miss out. On top of all this, our Welcome Pass gives you access to four unmissable club nights so be sure to grab one before they go!
Join a Student Group
Societies aren’t just for first year undergrads! Our Societies Fair is a great way to meet the different student groups across two days. You can have a chat with them and sign up if you find something you like.
Did you know last year a new Postgraduate Community was set up? This is the perfect way to meet and network other postgrads while taking part in fun activities and events. Want to hear from members of the PG Community? Read our blog to find out more.
The Guild has over 350 societies, including cultural and international societies – like the International Students Association, academic societies, faith groups and sports, hobby and volunteering groups and even a Commuter Students Society!
Meet Abhishikha
Dr Abhishikha is our Postgraduate Officer here at the Guild. Her job is to support and represent you during your time at Birmingham and raise the postgrad voice in the Guild and across the University. Whether you have questions or have ideas to improve the postgraduate student experience, please do get in touch with your Postgraduate Officer.
