    Ideas

I think we should have Open Book Exams as in todays world, you will very rarely be in a situation where you cannot refer back to your own notes or the internet. Why should our grade depend on our memory capacity.

    Policy

The Guild officers should have a mandate to keep campaigning towards open book exams for the next 5 years.

10:13pm on 23 Oct 23 Worth noting the university has a pretty good policy on this already, specifically 2.10 of the Code of Practice on Taught Programme and Module Assessment and Feedback: "Where examinations to be taken under controlled conditions(2) are deemed necessary, they should not normally contribute more than 50% to the overall module mark. There may be exceptions to this if there are PSRB requirements or specific pedagogic reasons, but in these cases, it is not expected that exams will contribute more than 80% to the overall module mark." Where: (2) - These examinations are traditional on-campus timed ‘closed book’ exams and on-campus timed ‘open book’ exams that are normally centrally scheduled (by the Timetabling and Examinations team) in the designated exam periods. It is these exams that should not normally contribute more than 50% to the overall module mark.

10:25am on 2 Nov 23 Perhaps there is a discussion to be had about the weighting of closed book exams, PRSB requirements says it will not contribute to more than 80%, which suggests there is the flexibility to be sub 80%, however a lot of the time, particularly for our mathematical students, closed book exams are consistently 80% of the overall module mark, we surely need to moving in a different direction.
