DISCOVER DEBATING.

We all know that support for oracy (speaking and listening skills) early on in someone’s life can have a huge impact on their confidence and life opportunities, which is why the ESU is giving away free debating programmes to over 100 state-maintained primary schools across England and Wales over the next 2 years.

The English-Speaking Union is looking for mentors to deliver this programme in the North East of England, Midlands, London and Wales. No prior experience of debating is required, just an enthusiasm for developing oracy skills in young people. The ESU will provide full training, lesson plans and resources, as well as ongoing support throughout the programme.

Discover Debating is a comprehensive debating programme that creates demonstrable progress in literacy and oracy in primary school students. The package of debating lesson plans, continuous professional development for teachers and mentor support creates a culture of confident communicators in primary schools. This programme also comes with a pupil attainment tracker to allow mentors and teachers to see the progress of their pupils and the impact of the programme.

Discover Debating mentors will need to commit to the following:

- To deliver a set course of lesson plans for an hour each week over one term, and one day at the end of both subsequent terms.
- To work for the ESU for the academic year 2017/18
- Be willing to travel up to an hour each way to their allocated school (travel expenses will be provided by the ESU)
- To attend one of the following training sessions:

Durham Tuesday 6th June at Durham University
Cardiff Tuesday 13th June at Cardiff University
Birmingham Thursday 15th June at The Library, Birmingham
London Monday 19th June at Dartmouth House, Mayfair

All training sessions will run from 10am – 6pm. Lunch, refreshments and all travel expenses will be provided by the ESU.

What can we offer you?
- You’ll be paid £30 for each 1 hour workshop, plus full travel expenses.
- You’ll receive full training and ongoing professional development. The ESU also covers the cost of a Child Protection Level 2 qualification and an Enhanced DBS Disclosure
- You’ll have the opportunity for internships and paid work at ESU headquarters in Mayfair, London
- You’ll have access to many other opportunities to work with the ESU across England and Wales, helping young people to realise their full potential by improving their communication skills and boosting their confidence

“Mentoring gives you the opportunity to give back to young people and to teach them new skills: public speaking skills, analytic skills and the ability to come up with a coherent argument. To be able to share that with people all around the country is amazing”
Johnny Allain-Labon

We strongly believe that strong speaking and listening skills can transform lives, if you think so too please sign up to get involved.
Applications close at midnight on Monday 29th May.
